Insect Eating

I am learning to: persuade my audience using persuasive writing

Are you sick and tired of eating the same old dinner? Your kids don’t even appreciate your hard work? But if you were cooking with bugs that wouldn’t happen! Well let's try some creepy crawly and gross looking bugs, you are probably thinking are you crazy, but really a lot people usually screw up there face and say ewwww! The real case is that people that have tried bugs actually like them. Fun fact that the insects don’t make greenhouse gasses like your cow and sheep, so you will also be saving the planet at the same time. So I want you to have a go about eating those bugs.

Slip, slop, yum yum in my tum, do you love tasty treats? I know I do! But do you know what's even better, well it would definitely be chocolate covered crickets, mealworm fries and scorpion lollipops and all the other yummy lollies. These slimy bugs might just look like yucky bugs just come from your garden (they aren’t, don’t take them out of your garden and eat them), but these bugs are healthy, so no need to feel guilty for gaining weight because they are yummy but also healthy. They also make great treats for kids and getting them to try new things, And great for on the go snacks.

Do you know what is high in protein and vitamins? If you guessed meat you would be right but in this case you are wrong. They always say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but in this case it would be a bug a day keeps the doctor away. Eating bugs is good for you in many ways high in calcium, full of vitamins and high in protein, do you see how healthy they are? Bugs can give you many ideas for you creative and healthy dinners, it will taste even better than KFC!!!

Chocolate, cookies and donuts, that is a way to start the day. But do you know that insects are a way better way to start your day and finish with dinner, well there are recipes from around the world you can go on your computer and search recipes from around the world like mealworm fries, cricket cookies, chocolate covered crickets, Bee-LT-es Sandwich, Wax worm tacos, Caramel cricket cheesecake just to name a few. Thailand, Mexico, China, Brazil and Australia are some of the countries in the kitchen cooking with insects.

As you can see that tasty treats and cooking with insects, and all those other healthy options with bugs. That is why I strongly agree with eating bugs they are a healthy food and they don't cause greenhouse gasses, that is why I strongly recommend insects for YOU!!

NZ Native Kiwi Bird

I am learning to: inform my audience by writing an information report
By Kara

What bird has wings but cannot fly and is the national bird of New Zealand? Yes it is the Kiwi, the kiwi bird not the kiwifruit. Many people get confused with the word kiwi, this is report is on the kiwi bird. This bird has feathers and wings yet cannot fly and is related to very large well known birds that cannot fly either, the Moa, Emu and Ostrich. However the kiwi is smaller in size and can be compared to the size of a chicken. The kiwi’s eggs are quite large they are about the same size as an ostrich egg. This means the female kiwi is also often larger than the male kiwi as the female has to hold the egg. Most people only know of one type of kiwi however there are 5 species of kiwi. The Brown Kiwi, Great Spotted Kiwi, Little Spotted Kiwi, Rowi and Tokoeka. These kiwis live all over New Zealand . The kiwis the habitat is vital to their survival, they need a place where they can live, that provides food and keeps them safe from predators.

Habitat
There's no place like home for many creatures, the kiwi can be found throughout the country. A habitat is a place where a animal lives it is the natural living, or plants organism, the kiwi is well known to adapt to its surroundings. The kiwi doesn’t require perfect forests, but can live in a range of habitats. However we do need to provide habitats that they are able to eat and be protected from predators. From forests they need a healthy environment for a healthy diet.

Diet
Kiwis are omnivores which means that they eat both meat and plants. They mainly eat invertebrates, which is generally an insect with no backbone. They have a variety of food from grubs, to berries even to crayfish. Kiwis don’t require a lot of water, they can get a lot of water from the food they eat. For example a earthworm is made up of 85 percent water. This means that the Kiwi can survive in very dry places. When a Kiwi does need to drink it puts its whole beak in the water and tilt their head back for it to fall down from their beak. These native birds need to have a healthy environment to provide their food, the kiwi habitat is vital to their survival, they need a place to be safe from all their predators.

Predators
Dogs, cats, possums, stoats, wild pigs and rodents are particularly hard on adult birds and also the unhatched eggs. The larger predators make a meal of the kiwi bird if found, while the rodents target the young and unhatched eggs for their meal. This is bad news for the kiwi which struggle to breed in the best of environments. Without adult birds there are no eggs or kiwi chicks to keep the population stable and growing. These predators ruin their habitats and impact on the food that the kiwi can find, as hedgehogs and other rodents also target the food supply of kiwi. Kiwis need safety from such predators

Finally as you can see the kiwi is a unique and special icon to New Zealand. This native bird is endangered and faces many threats. If the kiwi is to survive, then we must learn about the kiwi, its habitat, the food it requires and also those that threaten the kiwi. The Kiwi is important to New Zealand they are our bird native bird and in order for future generation to know kiwis then we must protect them.

The Safety Robot

I am learning to: create a narrative writing from an image

Sam looked up at the sky, it was 2050 he was trying to be quick to get home. He wore thick circle glasses, he wanted to be an inventor when he was older.  He was a poor boy, he didn’t have any money. “But at least I can go to school.” he said in his mind thinking, what he could create.

I was struck awake by a Bang!! I went down stairs but there wasn’t anything there, I ran back to my room. I tried and tried to go back to sleep, but he was to scared to sleep, he thought he would be hurt.
In the morning, he was very very scared, he went down stairs, to eat breakfast and then went to get
his bag.

I walk to school that day, I went to my class room, room 24.  I had science first thing in the morning I heard a bang! As I was opening the door, I saw that the science teacher had a black face of smoke, and coughing like mad he said. “Good morning class (coffing) today we will be making a start on our robots.”

I ran home with my arms fill with robotic building goods, as I ran upstairs with the goods and slammed the door behind me and dump all the goods on my desk “puff puff puff.” He started with finding all the right pieces and put it all to grather. 1 hour later “Done” Sam said in a good tone he had dinner and then he thought about what the robot would be made for “I know I call it the safety robot.”

The next morning he went to school he carried his big robot he got to tried and put him done and then had a ‘’thought how about I turn it on to see if it really works.’’ and it did work so they walked to school in the morning they had a great idea ‘’well before I turned you on I thought of making you into a safety robot so do you think that's a good idea’’ Sam said "Well what does a safety robot do.’’
"They protect people that get scared.’’

They went to the science room but the safety robot couldn’t fit!! So he had to stay outside, Sam took the class and the teacher and they went down to the field and, showed them his safety robot. Sam got 1st prize and passed science.

Mashed Pumpkin

I am learning to inform my audience by sharing an entertaining moment.

When I got home from school, I smelt the nightmare that waited for me... MASHED PUMPKIN, ARRGGGHHH! I immediately went to my room feeling sick, I tried and tried to ignore the smell, but I couldn’t resist it, it was to strong I couldn’t bare to breathe. I wished that the pumpkin wouldn’t be for dinner.

Mum called, “Dinner time!’’ NOOOOO!!! I walked slowly to the dinner table I sat down. Mum put a plateful of food in front of me, it really was mashed pumpkin. I couldn’t believe it I knew then that I couldn’t of held the pumpkin in. I ran to the bathroom and threw up.

I came back looking brave at the pumpkin and said, “I am not eating this!”

But sadly It just had to be me I was the only one that had to sit there all night long the smell was starting to fade, being forced to eat this before I was allowed to get up. I was glad when my mum and dad went to bed, I had to make my move. I got up tiptoed to the pot and put all the mashed pumpkin into the big pot and then put the the pot back in the fridge. I got to give it to myself I had to stay up pretty late just to do that.

So I went to bed and fell asleep. In The morning I woke up I saw my mum in surprise she looked at me and said, “Don’t lie and tell me you ate all your dinner?” “Mmmmmm... Of course I ate it Mum!”
